What to do without social media

Updated: Jan 8

Social media is a must in today’s world. Without it, many people would lie around not knowing what to do because they’re so used to it. So, here are some things you can do pretty easily without the help of social media-or even the internet!

  • Colouring. While this may seem childish and strange, research and countless studies have shown that colouring can reduce stress and evoke a calming and comforting feeling. You can pick up a colouring book from any local arts-and-crafts shop, download and print easy mandalas or illustrations, or even just do small doodles on a page. Linked here is a Google drive folder with a large variety of colouring pages (and I mean variety-florals, quotes, and even Homer Simpson biting into a donut!) so, have fun!

  • Do some reading. I know it’s not for everyone, but as an avid reader myself I can confirm it can be so enjoyable when with the right book! There are thousands of books in the world-fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, mystery, and more. Go to your local library (or an online library website if that’s available in your area) and just search for a genre you like. It doesn’t matter if the book is 3 or 30 chapters. Give it a go!

  • Discover a new passion! There are loads of different hobbies possible in the world. Try different styles of art, take photos (for yourself, not for Instagram!), learn how to cook…the possibilities are endless and in the end you’ll have an enjoyable time and a new passion, while cutting down on social media use. It’s a win-win!

  • Hang out with friends! Because of how social media sucks in people to spend hours at a time staring at the screen, you might not go out as often as you should. Going outside is healthy and going with a friend can be even better. Try going for a walk, or try and discover new places in your area to visit. You’d be surprised, there can be some really great places just around the corner! Even if you don’t live close to a friend, try looking at the public transport in your area or go with a sibling or your parents. In this way, you can really connect with your family and friends!

  • Play a sport! Even if you aren't a sporty person (I'm not either, don't worry!), there are plenty of games that you can play that will get you active and out of breath. Some really fun ones I like are Bulldogs, Dodgeball, any kind of tag you can think of (be creative-Virus tag, Freeze tag, etc!), Hopscotch, you can even put on a Just Dance video on the TV if you're absolutely stuck for options. Being active is great and it can be so fun!
